Migrating from one password manager to another
This morning I decided to check on my 1Password account one last time -- before I finally kill the subscription. I have been using it sparingly since iCloud Passwords became a stand-alone application. I missed the 1Password support for files and full notes, which were not migrated to iCloud Passwords or Proton Pass. I found out about it last Friday when I re-enabled Apple Pay on my Apple Watch, something I forgot to configure. Good thing it was enabled on the iPhone. Anyway, so I revisited 1Password and exported an unencrypted file so I can extract the files. These, along with non-password entries, were migrated to Apple Notes (and encrypted, of course).
Afterwards, I decided to weed out old accounts from iCloud Passwords. I found around 233 stale and useless accounts. Stale accounts were those created way back before 2020 (copied from 1Password), of which the services are no longer alive. Useless accounts, such as Adobe, Basecamp, etc., were processed, i.e., I logged in, deleted the account, and then deleted the account from the password manager. I also updated the email addresses associated with some accounts after abandoning those old domains.
With a leaner iCloud Passwords database, I thought that I can nuke Proton Pass and copy the data. Unfortunately, Proton Pass does not allow the transfer of passkeys, unlike when transferring from iCloud Passwords to 1Password, and vice-versa. Bummer!
Now all I can do is wait for Proton Pass to support passkeys import/export. That is fine for the moment, as Proton Pass is my third-party back-up password manager anyway.
